Case Study

Apprentice Case Study - Sam Phelps

Samuel completed a Business and Administration Level 2 & 3 Apprenticeship at Rosebank Health. Since completing his qualifications, Samuel has been employed as a full time member of staff at Rosebank.
Rosebank Health, is a doctor’s surgery, one of the largest in Gloucestershire.
Samuel performs  a range of different administrative tasks at Rosebank, including sorting and sending clinical documents to relevant doctors, dealing with electronic results that have been sent from the hospital, running clinical searches that help the practice maintain a high standard of care.
Samuel explains how he found the interview process with SWAC “I came across the apprenticeship on the Indeed job website. I had recently relocated from Plymouth and was in the market for a new career/job. I applied for the placement online and I received a call from SWAC the next day inviting me in for an interview. I attended the interview and was asked various questions about myself, goals, future plans and my attraction to the placement. We also talked about my current qualifications. After the interview, I received a call from Shelley inviting me to attend an interview at the host organisation the very next day.”
“I attended the interview at the host organisation the following day and afterwards Shelley called me to discuss how the interview went and to offer me the placement.  I accepted of course!”
Samuel explained why he chose the apprenticeship route “I was initially attracted to the vacancy because it was based around administration within a business which is something that I have a keen interest in.”
“I studied Business Administration levels 2 and 3. The Apprenticeship has gone really well. I prefer on the job learning as exams were not my strong point. The apprenticeship also allows you to take your time and spread the work out over a period of time.”
“My Learning Account Manager was Shelly King. She was always just a phone call/text message away. Shelly was very supportive and always had time to visit me and the other apprentices at Rosebank health.”
Samuel really enjoyed his Apprenticeship “My placement has been a fantastic experience. I have made new friends and gained valuable experience within the workplace. I am now a fire marshal, which is a new responsibility that I have recently gained.”
Samuel is keen to promote apprenticeships and SWAC to others; he says “Go for it! It is quite possibly the best decision I ever made. I would highly recommend an apprenticeship because not only do you get experience within the industry, you also learn at the same time, gaining a qualification upon completion. There is also the option to progress to a higher level and study to get higher NVQ.”
