Case Study

Host Organisation Case Study - Gloucestershire Stove Centre

The Gloucestershire Stove Centre based in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire provides a wide range of products such as woodburners, stoves and fireplaces, as well as providing associated services such as chimney sweeping and fire servicing.

Alistair Davidson, Managing Director of Gloucestershire Stove Centre felt that fate played a hand when it came to getting his company an apprentice. After an initial visit from the South West Apprenticeship Company (SWAC), Alistair was approached by an enthusiastic teenager seeking work. The SWAC Apprenticeship route held the answer for everyone.

“I felt that taking on an apprentice was really worthwhile and you get a good, well trained employee at the end of it. After talking to Lee, our Employer Account Manager about SWAC Apprenticeships, I thought this was a good idea and decided to go ahead”

Their apprentice Callum isproving to be a real asset to the business and works on a variety of tasks:

We are teaching him all areas of our business; he works in the office, in the shop and goes out fitting fires, sweeping chimneys and producing quotes. He is doing really well and we are pleased to have him on our team”

The SWAC service offers a number of advantages to The Gloucestershire Stove Centre, including help from an Employer Account Manager. SWAC also helps Host Organisations with recruitment and payroll administration:

“We receive very good support from SWAC, as does the apprentice. Arranging an apprentice through SWAC helps a lot with our work load”

Apprentices are an investment for the future and Alistair is keen to recommend Apprenticeships to other employers.

“We all work as a team and so we all play a part in helping Callum in his new role. I hope he stays with us and has learned a lot, and of course I hope this will benefit the business. Getting an apprentice through SWAC is the best thing I have done for some time. It is well recommended!
