Case Study

Kyle Lewis at The Roman Baths (Searcys)

Kyle Lewis began his Apprenticeship at The Roman Baths Kitchen (Searcys) as an apprentice Chef. Working for a restaurant that is a café by day to a social hub restaurant at night Kyle had to adapt quickly to a constantly changing role.

Due to the diversity of the restaurant Kyle’s role is very varied: “My main role is to offer support as requested throughout the services. Sometimes I’ll be working on main meals sometimes starters and sometimes desserts.  It is a very varied job but always busy”

Kyle heard about the Apprenticeship opportunity whilst looking on the National Apprenticeship Service website.  He applied for the position and after having a telephone interview and face to face interview with his Learner Account Manager he then went for a trial day at The Roman Baths before being offered the position.

Kyle has always had a passion for food and cooking so deciding on becoming an apprentice Chef was an easy decision.  He was keen to get an Apprenticeship at The Roman Baths because “they are a well-known name in the food and hospitality industry and I knew I would get a high standard of training. The environment was busy and they have many different chefs to learn from so I knew I would be supported well”.

Whilst completing his Apprenticeship Kyle studied Professional Cookery with Lifetime training. Since completing his Apprenticeship Kyle has been working full time at The Roman Baths and is considering accepting the Head Chefs offer of moving to a kitchen in London to learn new experiences and push his training to a higher level.

When reflecting on his time as an apprentice it is clear that Kyle thoroughly enjoyed his experience:

“I love service and getting the plates out on time to a high standard and I like things to be presented well.  I have got loads out of my Apprenticeship but mainly how to work within a professional environment and my knowledge of processes and procedures has greatly improved. I’ve been pushed to be my best on a daily basis”
