Kirsty is an Advanced Engineering Apprentice at Himag Planar Magnetics and is currently working towards a BTEC Level 3 in Electrical Engineering.  Kirsty started her apprenticeship in November 2015 and is progressing well.

Kirsty’s role within the company includes using solid Edge (CAD software) to create dimensioned drawings and 3D models of different transformers and the parts needed for transformers. She also has the responsibility of making sure all of the new parts are numbered and organised in the correct file, which includes liaising with the Head Office in Israel as they issue the part numbers.

Kirsty added “Since starting my apprenticeship I have had many different roles, also built my own transformers in the main factory step by step. This enabled me to learn the basics so I could then gain more responsibilities.”

Kirsty explained why she chose the apprenticeship route “I felt starting a career in engineering through an apprenticeship would suit me as it was a chance for me to start from the bottom, learning all the basics and being able to progress by gaining a qualification and being able to gain hands on experience in the workplace.”

Kirsty is really enjoying her Apprenticeship My work placement is going very well and continues to get better as I gain more responsibility. One project I have recently completed was my most challenging to date and required me to learn more and more skills in order to complete it. The task required me to draw/ redesign around 25 pieces of copper with bent terminals so they all fit together in the finished transformer. Projects like this highlight the positives of how far I have come since first starting and also show how much more I have to learn.”

“Overall the main positive I have got out of my work placement is the fact that I have gained real experience of a career in engineering and I am still learning and progressing every day, as well as thoroughly enjoying it.”

Kirsty explained how SWAC have supported her throughout the apprenticeship so far “Being an apprentice with SWAC will give you added support unlike any other apprenticeship. They helped me huge amounts throughout the interview process and gave me a chance to get an apprenticeship in something I had no experience in but wanted a career in. I would highly recommend an apprenticeship with SWAC as the support you receive is outstanding even before being offered the job. It is also great to know you have someone to talk to with any issues whether it’s at work or at college throughout the duration of your apprenticeship.”

Kirsty is keen to promote apprenticeships and SWAC to others “I would 100% recommend an apprenticeship to anyone interested in gaining more qualifications but also looking at starting a career. Deciding to get an apprenticeship instead of university was the best decision I ever made as not only am I becoming a qualified engineer, I am benefiting from real hands on experience of Engineering and this will give me the chance to progress onto higher education.”

“I hope to complete my apprenticeship and become a qualified engineer, and then I would definitely like to go on to complete a HNC qualification and progress even higher if possible.”
